Secondary

The Secondary years are exciting as students are beginning to consider life beyond school and explore opportunities they will have for their career and service.

Secondary School is a time when academic outcomes form a major part of our students’ lives and that of their families. We are committed to supporting each child in a balance of academic strength, emotional care and nurturing, and a preparation for their continued journey into life. We encourage students to consider the complexities of life through a Christian worldview, fostering intellectual curiosity and challenging them to reach their full learning potential.

The College also ensures an ease of transition for every student as they progress through Secondary. This is where the partnership between teachers and parents/carers really begins to flourish, as we enrich our students in their learning.

At the College, we provide all mandatory subjects for Years 7-12 as well as a wide variety of elective subjects. Year 7 and 8 are given the opportunity to choose an area of interest for study once a week, as part of our I-XL program. Below is a list of some of our recently offered electives:

Music
Music collaboratively and in community builds relational skills and supports and develops key parts of the brain that bring benefits to subjects such as maths and literature. Music encourages personal discipline, concentration and commitment qualities students take into the world beyond the classroom.

Agriculture is a focus at the College that continues to grow. Programs run from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Our younger students are engaged in managing garden beds and small animals, including poultry. Older and more experienced students begin working with cattle.

We value sport as an essential part of a child’s development.

The College offers both competitive sport programs (including inter-school and community competitions) and more social sport programs.

Exploring the interaction of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics learning areas engages students in rich experiences of real-world applications.

STEM is a cross-curricular focus of the College and a variety of Co-Curricular STEM programs are offered.

The leadership program at Wagga Wagga Christian College is aimed at creating a student community, which contributes to the College in practical ways, and provides for a broad range of students to be involved.

As students are identified as benefiting from extension programs, the College offers a range of options that aim to challenge and grow each child. A diverse range of extension and acceleration programs provide opportunities for students to excel in their passions and talents.

Programs & Courses

Year 9 – 12 students have the opportunity to select a range of subjects which support and grow their gifts and areas of interest. Subject choices are not limited to onsite learning and often include external courses.

Students participate in fortnightly meetings as a year group and discuss pathways post their secondary schooling, find support in the practical development of resumes and basic work skills, a growth in their understanding of work place safety and the rights and responsibility of an employee.

Life Skills

If a student qualifies as a candidate for the Life Skills program, the process to enable this to happen will include meetings with the student and their family, teachers and support staff.

Vocational Education and Training Courses (VET)

For students who prefer a more practical course, the link between the College and Riverina TAFE allows students the chance to study a vocational subject. Students travel to TAFE for one afternoon a week, and complete work placements as required.

Distance Education

Some students choose to study courses which may not be available in a given year (for example, Language courses). In this case, students may choose to study the course by distance education. We offer students the opportunity to study these courses through several providers, including:

  • Christian Education (CEN) Schools
  • Finigan School of Distance Education
  • NSW School of Languages (where the course is not available at Finigan SDE)

Mentor Program

Student mentoring at the College is a strategic programme designed to help students work through some of the challenges that come with Secondary school and transition into adulthood.

Over the years, students have greatly appreciated the option and opportunity to gain this support.

The regular catch-ups are student-driven and staff-supported, where together they meet to set goals for the upcoming weeks. They have the chance to recognise and work through stresses, organisational barriers and plans, and reflect on their progress.

The College is well known for its supportive and nurturing environment, and I can say firsthand that this is what I experienced myself. From Kindergarten to Year 12, students are consistently supported as staff partner with their families to provide a Christ-centred education to them.
